Second pole position for series leader Giermaziak

Kuba Giermaziak (PL/VERVA Lechner Racing Team) secured pole position for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race on the Hungaroring. With a time of 1:48.978 minutes, the current points’ leader outpaced his rivals and takes up Sunday’s race from the first grid spot for the second time. Lining up alongside Giermaziak on the first grid row is the Porsche International Cup Scholarship driver Earl Bamber (NZ/Fach Auto Tech). Behind the pair sharing the second row are Nicki Thiim (DK/Walter Lechner Racing Team) and Christopher Zöchling (A/Konrad Motorsport). “For me as a Pole, Hungary is like a home race. I’m particularly thrilled about starting from the first grid spot and of course I have my sights set on the podium,” explained a relaxed Giermaziak, who currently leads the series with a five-point advantage over Bamber.

With a track temperature of up to 51 degrees Celsius and an air temperature of 27 degrees, the 30-minute qualifying session turned into a poker game. At first, all 22 drivers turned several laps in their 460 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars before heading back into the pits to wait to see what the competition would do. With just six minutes left to the qualifying session the entire field swarmed back out on the track, with Giermaziak turning the perfect lap. “With Kuba and me as the two best-placed drivers in the championship starting on the first grid row,” analysed Bamber, “I’m curious to see what will happen in the first corner.” Third quickest qualifier Thiim is not a great fan of the Hungarian circuit, but was pleased with his result: “The Hungaroring is definitely not my favourite track. Third place puts us in a great position, but I reckon I could even have clinched pole. I’m looking forward to the race.”

The international diversity of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is reflected in the top ten qualifiers with nine drivers coming from different countries. Behind Poland’s Giermaziak is New Zealander Bamber, with the reigning Supercup champion Thiim from Denmark in third and Austrian Zöchling on fourth. Germany’s Michael Ammermüller (Walter Lechner Racing Team) follows in fifth, with the Spaniard Porsche junior Alex Riberas (Mc Gregor powered by Attempto Racing) taking up the race from sixth. “We’ve made great progress and with my starting position I’m feeling good about the race,” said Riberas. His Swiss teammate Fabien Thuner was thrilled with position seven. Porsche junior Klaus Bachler from Austria planted his Porsche on eighth: “I’m satisfied with the time differences in qualifying, but I’m not particularly pleased with my position. Hopefully I can make up some places in the race.” His compatriot Clemens Schmid (Walter Lechner Racing Team) qualified on ninth, with Britain’s Ben Barker (VERVA Lechner Racing Team) rounding of the top ten in qualifying.

Disappointment for Porsche junior Sven Müller (D/Team Project 1): “Our timing was bad and I found myself in the middle of traffic and didn’t get a free run,” explained Müller, who qualified on 13th place. Porsche junior Connor de Phillippi (USA/FÖRCH Racing by Lukas Motorsport) struggled with 18th: “It’s very annoying. Everything went wrong today.”

Sky Deutschland covers the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup from 11.35 hours CEST and broadcasts Sunday’s race, as does Eurosport, live from 11.45 hours.
